Couples and Relationship Counseling

If you are husband and wife, two partners of the same sex, two adult family members or two close friends, this type of counseling is for you. If you are tired of confronting the same issue over and over, is important to understand that most probably, each side is convinced their view is “right”. Couples and relationship counseling helps you to see the relationship through a new lens where well-used patterns are explored and where both opinions are considered and valued.

In couples and relationship counseling, old belief systems about how relationships work are uncovered so these can be explored for their effectiveness in the present. Once a light is shined on these beliefs, many dissolve and new beliefs are formed that are more in line with present day circumstances. This can lead to greater self-awareness and more flexibility for each person to give and receive love.

Some issues that bring people to couples or relationship counseling are:

  • Addiction/Partner, Friend, Family Addiction Support
  • Balance (Work/Life/Family/Friends)
  • Blended Families
  • Chronic Illness
  • Divorce, Separation or Discerning the Next Step
  • Extended Family Involvement
  • Infidelity/Cheating
  • Emotional and sexual intimacy
  • Presence of Mental Illness
  • Pre-Marital Readiness

In the first few sessions each person shares their history of the relationship and from this, initial goals are set. As the therapy progresses and more issues are brought to the surface, conflict can arise. My role is to hold a safe space for each person to share their truth and respectfully be heard. Learning how to share issues through open communication and how to really listen without defensiveness is at the heart of couples or relationship counseling.

Give it a try. Bring your curiosity and willingness to explore what is causing the disconnect and to make some changes. Give yourself the gift of having more fulfillment in your most important relationships.
